Brother-in-law to us to a local collection of old tractors. They are right here in town. The gentleman that has collected them over the years was very adamant about not coming on his property but they were right on the edge of the street and as long as we stayed in the street, it was ok to take pictures. He was concerned a liability if there was an injury and also he had been plagued by theft.
In any case, it was evident that there were many ideas of how a tractor ought to be built. Considering the technology and tools of the time, some of the solutions were pretty elegant. Take the design of center hub of this first wheel.
This next one had another idea of how to get traction in the field.
Can you imagine the ride you would get on pavement on that one.
This next one, was it a Steam driven??
Here is another shot. One heck of a Radiator, huh?
This last one is rather strange. To the left you can see what appears to be an auto rear end. It's not shown but to the left of that appears to be provisions for a motor. This combination would drive the front wheels of this contraction. You can see on of the solid wheels behind the rear end. This mess pulled the seat and controls way behind it. There was an attachment below the seat for pulling tools such as plows or what ever.
